Six Shia fighters from a militia group linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (RGC) have been killed in Syria, according to Iranian media reports.

The six slain fighters from the Fatemiyoun Division, an RGC-linked Afghan Shia militia, were buried Thursday in Iran’s city of Qom, Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported.

Exactly where the Shia militiamen were killed — and who they were fighting — remains unclear.

Supported by Tehran, the Fatemiyoun Division is an armed group made up exclusively of Afghan Shia fighters.

In recent years, members of the division have fought in Syria alongside Iranian troops and other Shia militias in support of Syria’s Assad regime.

Iran hosts an estimated three million Afghans, many of whom have fled persecution and armed conflict in their home country.
