Amir Nasr-Azadani (26), who last played as a defender for the Persian Gulf Pro League club Tractor in 2017, was sentenced to death for “treason” after showing his support for human rights and defending women’s rights in his country. Authorities have already executed at least two people in connection with protests in Iran last month, one of whom was hanged publicly. No sentence has been issued yet, and it remains unclear when his trial is set to begin.

The international football players’ union FIFPRO denounced the case, saying, “We stand in solidarity with Amir and demand that his sentence be lifted immediately.”
