Manchester United’s badge, which has been in use since 1998, has been censored in Iran because mythical creatures are banned.
The Red Devils old badge, last used in 1972, will be broadcast on Iranian TV for their Champions League Last 16 clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
A devil has been synonymous with the Old Trafford club since 1973, prior to that, United’s crest used to largely feature a ship to represent the Manchester Ship Canal.
The symbol, which is still visible on the current badge, hasn’t been the focal point since the 1970s but it is the image Iranian TV is broadcasting this Tuesday.
The reason is because Satanic symbols are banned in Iran including, it seems, the Red Devil of Manchester.
AS Roma experienced the same treatment last year with their badge showing Romulus and Remus suckling from a wolf but producers blurred out the animal’s teats.
At the time Iranian sports journalist Mehdi Rostampour wrote: “In 3,000 years, Remus and Romulus were only deprived of their mother’s milk.
“But Iran’s state broadcaster deprived them of even a wolf’s milk.”
United may be without their trusty mascot on TV but they face a PSG side without both star man Neymar and Edinson Cavani has also been ruled out.
United are yet to lose under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has nine wins from 10 matches, but that record will be tested even without the superstar duo
