A court in Saudi Arabia has issued preliminary sentences for eight Saudi nationals, charging them with spying for Iran and monitoring two foreign embassies in the kingdom, reports Al-Arabiya.
One of those convicted faces the death penalty having been found guilty of leaking confidential information to Iranian intelligence. The remaining seven sentenced to prison on espionage charges, for having “associated and cooperated with people working in the Iranian embassy”, according to a tweet by Saudi state television.
The confidential information which was leaked may compromise Saudi national security. The intelligence on two foreign embassies included information such as their entrances, exits and security details. The embassies in question have not been named.
All eight have been informed that they have the right to appeal their sentences during the 30 days which follow the official sentencing.
