(2016)Major Danish firm Vestas is exploring opportunities for cooperation in Iran’s energy sector, an official with the company, told Trend News Agency.
“There is a great potential in the Iranian market, and Vestas is exploring opportunities there,” Anders Riis said on Sunday.
“We collaborated with SUNA (Iran Renewable Energy Organization) for a workshop on April 18 and 19 that presented the benefits of wind energy,” he added.
However, Riis underlined that it’s too early to speak about specific projects or plans in the country.
Vestas expressed readiness to invest in Iran’s renewable energy sector.
Earlier, Vestas Vice President Inigo Sabater said in a meeting with Iran’s Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian that Iran has a more favorable climate than Spain where 25 percent of the national energy is supplied by wind turbines, 20,000 megawatts of which were installed by Vestas before 2010, while Iran’s vast landmass provides the perfect platform to make the most of wind power.
During the meeting, the Danish official proposed an investment plan worth $100 million to be implemented over five to seven years.
Renewable energy currently accounts for less than one percent of Iran’s energy basket. The country relies heavily on oil and gas as energy resources.
Energy intensity in Iran is also very high.
