Three Iranians were sentenced to lashes for theft charges today in Tehran. According to Javan Online state-run website one of the defendants was detained in the summer of 2019 for stealing at knife point Isfahan, central Iran.

The report said the man had “confessed” during interrogations to five counts of theft using a knife and claimed that he had “injured” five of his victims.

The judiciary sentenced him to prison, lashes and returning the stolen goods.

The other two defendants were Afghan-nationals who were tried in Tehran’s Criminal Court. They were detained but later released on bail and fled the country.

Their trial was held in absentia, and each were sentenced to 15 years of prison, 74 lashes and returning the stolen goods.

Despite the prohibition of the use of inhumane punishments by all international civil and political rights conventions, flogging is regularly handed out by the Iranian regime. Over 100 “offences” are punishable by flogging under the Iranian law. According to a 2020 report by Amnesty International, at least 160 were sentenced to flogging for theft and assault as well as for acts that are protected under the international human rights law.
