Saeed Afkari, brother to executed wrestling champion Navid Afkari and imprisoned Afkari brothers, tweeted yesterday that forensics confirmed his two brothers’ injuries from torture.

“According to forensics, my brother Habib has suffered a broken toe, an unhealed broken wrist, and a torn shoulder from his detainment in Intelligence. Vahid’s neck and arm are injured after committing suicide in protest to physical and psychological torture. They have been in solitary confinement for 279 days without medical treatment,” Saeed wrote in his tweet.

The three Afkari brothers were arrested for participating in nationwide protests in August 2018. After Navid’s execution in September, Vahid and Habib have been kept in solitary and banned from phone calls in Shiraz’s Adel Abad Prison in southwestern Iran for over nine months.

In an audio message released early May from prison, Vahid Afkari gave a plea for help. Prison officials have threatened that if he does not “confess” he will be executed. Iranians took to Twitter to support the political prisoners in the coming days.

They also supported the Afkari brothers with wall graffiti which reads, “The Afkari brothers have revived the meaning of resistance. Be their voice”.

Amnesty International published a report and tweeted in their support.

Vahid and Habib were sentenced to an overall 81 years of prison and lashes for their part in August 2018 protests in Shiraz.

The brothers have been kept in the “Ebrat” or “Cautionary” section, since September 2020, when Navid was executed. The Ebrat Section is also known as the “closed off” section where inmates are not allowed to communicate with the outside world.
