A 20 year old female political prisoner detained in a southwestern Iran prison, was severely beaten and mistreated by prison guards. According to an Iranian human rights group, Ameneh Zaheri Sari, detained for the past seven months in the Sepidar Prison in Ahvaz, sustained severe injuries to the elbow.

She was detained last November, a day after the arrest of her brother and father.

A source close to her family told the Iran Human Rights Activists News Agency that despite her injury, she is denied medical treatment.

It is not clear why she was beaten by prison guards.

Ameneh has also been suffering from severe swelling in some parts of her body and according to the prison medic, had to be urgently taken to the hospital for medical tests. However, she has been banned from being transferred to the hospital.

The report said that officials refused to release her despite an issued bail order.

Ameneh’s father, Hatab Zaheri Sari, along with her brother Amin, were detained on November 5, 2018 after being summoned to the 12th Branch of the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court. A day later, security forces arrested Ameneh, an accounting student, in her home.

On March 16, Ali, another son of the family was arrested by intelligence agents for unknown reasons and was then transferred to Sheiban Prison.

Despite more than seven months of detention, the family is kept in a state of limbo in prison without clear charges.

The Iranian regime detained hundreds of Arab-Iranians in the southwestern province of Khuzestan after a September 22, 2018 attack on a military parade in Ahvaz, the capital of Khuzestan province.

In a November 2 statement, Amnesty International said that the scale of the Ahvaz arrests was deeply alarming.

“The timing suggests that the Iranian authorities are using the attack in Ahvaz as an excuse to lash out against members of the Ahwazi Arab ethnic minority, including civil society and political activists, in order to crush dissent in Khuzestan province,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Research and Advocacy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

At the time, human rights activists in Ahvaz reported that 22 people in various prisons in Ahvaz were hanged in retaliation to the attack.

The executions were reportedly carried out on Thursday November 8, 2018.
