The head of Iran’s theocratic regime, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, took to Twitter on Monday to denounce the Trump administration’s expected peace plan as a “satanic and vicious plot” and promise that the “fabricated Zionist regime will be eradicated.”

Khamenei often lashes out at Israel and the US and has positioned Iran as a key supporter and funder of Palestinian terror groups.

“Everyone should know that the satanic and vicious plot that the U.S. has for #Palestine— calling it the Deal of Century— will never happen,” he tweeted on Monday. “To the dismay of the U.S. politicians, #Palestine will never forgotten and #AlQuds will remain the capital of Palestine and the first Qibla of Muslims.”

In a thread of five Twitter posts, he went on to vow Jerusalem would never be “given” to Israel: “The turbulent dream that Al-Quds would be given to the Zionists will never come true. The Palestinian nation will stand against it and Muslim nations will back the Palestinian nation, never letting that happen.”

And he concluded: “By God’s grace, the Palestinian nation will certainly gain victory over the enemies and will witness the day when the fabricated Zionist regime will be eradicated.”

The comments come a day after Khamenei called for better ties with the world — though not with the United States, his official website said on Sunday.

Khamenei met President Hassan Rouhani and his cabinet on Sunday and spoke of the “necessity of developing diplomacy and relations with foreign countries,” according to a transcript published in English.

“Except for a few cases — such as the United States — Iran’s relations with other countries, including with the West and the East, must expand and further develop,” he said.

Although Khamenei did not mention Israel in his Sunday comments, several articles on the home page of his website call for the destruction of the “Zionist entity.”

Tehran’s diplomats have been scrambling to shore up trade ties with both European and Asian powers since the US announced in May that it was abandoning the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposing sanctions on Iran.

Khamenei’s statement recalls a famous slogan from the early days of the 1979 revolution: “Neither East nor West, Islamic Republic,” echoing a desire to strike a path independently from the major Cold War powers.

In February, Khamenei surprised observers by saying that Iran now prioritized ties with the East over the West — reflecting the much stronger ties it has developed with Russia and China in recent years.

Even before the US withdrawal, Iran had already been disappointed with the economic benefits of the nuclear deal as it emerged that a raft of remaining US sanctions were preventing the country from establishing international banking ties and other trade links.

He has called on Europe to give “real guarantees” that they can sustain trade with Iran despite US nuclear-related sanctions that will be fully reimposed by November 8.

On Sunday, he called for “courage and determination” from the government as it faced down the threats from the US, and said economic officials were now key to maintaining “hope and morale in people.”

The Trump administration has been working on a peace plan it says it hopes to present to the sides at a future date. The Palestinians have rejected the plan, and ceased cooperating with the US administration after US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital last December and moved the American embassy there in May.
