Iranian security forces killed at least 12 locals protesting severe water shortages in the southwestern province of Khuzestan. The nightly protests which started from July 15 continued for 10 days in over 35 cities across the country. Security forces resorted to lethal force, using live bullets, pellet guns and tear gas to crush protesters. Reports also indicated that the regime disrupted cellphone internet connectivity which is still ongoing in some cities in Khuzestan.

There have been widespread arrests in the past nights. The Human Rights News Agency identified the names of 102 detained protesters. The local Khakzadegan Telegram channel identified the names of 350 people. Both sources said there were many more.
Slain protesters

Mostafa Asakereh (Naimavi)

Mostafa was killed on the second night of the water protests in the restive city of Shadegan. 30-year-old Mostafa was a fishmonger in the local city market.

The state-run IRNA News Agency confirmed a young man was killed and said “seditionists” killed Mostafa in the protests. The regime uses the word seditionists to refer to protesters.
Ghassem Naseri (Khozeiri)

Ghassem was 17-years old and was killed on the third night of the protests in Kut Abdollah. According to the report by Amnesty International, a source with direct knowledge in Iran told them that plain-clothes intelligence agents visited Ghassem’s family shortly after he died and coerced them into reciting a pre-prepared script on camera.

Isa Baledi

Isa was a 27-years-old worker. Despite having a social sciences degree, he had been forced to work since he was a child due to poverty.

He was wounded on July 20 by security forces in Mahshahr. He went for treatment to a clinic but did not receive aid on time and passed away.

Isa was the breadwinner of his 3 sisters and mother. He had plans to get married in two weeks.

Hamzeh (Farzad) Fereisat

Farzad was killed by security forces on July 21 in Ahvaz during the water protests. He was 24 years old. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said they would give his body to his family on three conditions, that his family gives the IRGC his cellphone, they give the names of the person who filmed his death, and that they list the names of other protesters who were with him when he was killed.

Farzad’s family refused and his body was buried without his family knowing.

Mehdi Chanani

Mehdi was killed in the restive city of Shush on July 20 during the water protests. He was 24 years old, according to social media reports.

Hamid Mojadam (Jokari)

Hamid was killed in Chamran, southwestern Iran during the water protests. He was 23 years old, according to social media reports.

Meysam Achrash

Meysam was killed on July 21 in the Taleghani district of Mahshahr in southwestern Iran.

Hadi Bahmani

Hadi was killed by security forces in Izeh on July 20. He was 17 years old. According to social media reports, he was from Susasgerd but was working as a plasterer in Izeh.

Omid Azarkhush

20-year-old Omid Azarkhush was killed on July 22 in Aligoudarz western Iran. A police official in Lorestan confirmed a 20-year-old was killed, blaming it on “anti-revolutionaries”. He said the young man was killed with pellets used by “anti-revolutionaries.” Pellet shots are usually used by riot police to crack down on protests.

Mohammad Krushat

Mohammad Krushat was killed on July 20 in the city of Ahvaz in southwestern Iran. According to social media reports, he was 20 years old and was injured in the water protests. He passed away due to the severity of his wounds in the hospital.

Mohammad Abdollahi

Mohammad Abdollahi was killed in Izeh during the water protests.

Amir Mashari Ebadi

Amir was injured during the water protests and passed away in the hospital on July 23. According to social media reports, he was 22 years old and was killed in Mahshahr.
