Majid Assadi, a political prisoner in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, has been on hunger strike for the past 21 days following his transfer to Ward 209 of Evin Prison. His physical ailments as well as contracting COVID-19 in July are of great concern for his family.

According to Iran Human Rights, Majid Assadi was transferred from Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj to Ward 209 of Evin Prison on July 22 and began his hunger strike.

The transfer is said to have been made to interrogate him on a new case opened against him during his imprisonment.

An informed source told IHR: “Majid Assadi’s gastrointestinal illness and vision problems, as well as his infection with the coronavirus and the lack of medical treatment and returning him to solitary confinement before he had fully recovered cause concern for his condition.”

The source added: “He is in a critical condition and in the last phone call he had with his family, he stated that he had no information about the charges and the reasons for his transfer to solitary confinement and his inflammation of the eyes have returned, he may lose his eyesight if things continue this way.”

Majid Assadi was arrested by the Ministry of Intelligence forces at his family home in Karaj, at 10 pm on 18 February 2017, and transferred to ward 209 of Evin Prison. In the preliminary trial, he was sentenced to a year in prison for “propaganda against the system” and five years for “assembly and collusion against the system.” His sentence was upheld by the appeals court.

Majid Assadi, an economics graduate from Allameh Tabataba’i University, a member of the Central Council of the Islamic Association of the Faculty of Economics and a student activist, had previously served a 4 year sentence between 2011 and 2015.
