The British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has called on the new president of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) to release a British-Iranian dual national on the fourth anniversary of his arrest in Iran.

A UK government press release quoted Raab on Friday as saying, “We are doing everything we can to secure the release of Anoosheh and other dual British nationals who have been arbitrarily detained. We call on President Raisi’s administration to start to set a new course for Iran by releasing them.”

British detainees in Iran and their families have demanded the government to do more for their release. The UK is entangled in a large financial case with the government of Iran that says Britain should repay a 400-million-pound it received in the 1970s to deliver Chieftain tanks to Iran.

Ashoori has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on alleged spying for Israel. All dual nationals and foreigners detained by IRI are charges either for spying or anti-regime activities and tried in closed-door courts.

“Iran’s continued detention of Anoosheh Ashoori is wholly unjustified. We call on Iran to end his suffering and allow him to return home to be reunited with his wife Sherry, and children, Aryan and Elika,” Raab was quoted as saying.
