The Iranian teachers have held a rally for sixteen consecutive days in Tehran to protest the Iranian regime’s refusal to employ them.
All the teachers taking part in the rallies have passed the employment test provided by the Ministry of Education and are willing and ready to teach the younger generations of Iran, but the government has refused to provide them with jobs. A number of those involved had traveled from other cities to the capital to state their disapproval of the regime’s decision and make their voices heard.
The teachers have been protesting since last year, but the regime has refrained from addressing their demands. As the start of the academic year nears, the teachers are back to the street to resume their protests and remind the government of its duties.
The current ongoing protests began on September 3 and several of the teachers are camping outside of the education ministry overnight so that they can continue their demonstration the following day as soon as they wake up. During the demonstrations, protesters have also called for the release of their fellow teachers who have been arrested by the regime for taking part in the rallies.
Last Saturday, September 18, simultaneous protests took place across several other cities in Iran, including Ilam, Ahvaz, Isfahan, Shiraz, and Dehdasht. Among the protesters at the rallies were several retired teachers, many of whom are currently facing worsening economic problems because of the regime’s refusal to adjust their pensions to match the skyrocketing inflation rate and the decimation of the national currency.
Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), voiced her support for the protesting teachers and called on Iranians to support the teachers and other communities who are protesting for their rights.
On September 18, Maryam Rajavi posted a series of messages on her Twitter page, saluting the protesters who have taken to the streets in cities across Iran to demonstrate the frustrations of their lack of support from the education ministry. She listed the cities in which protests had taken place in which included Tehran, Isfahan, Karaj, Shiraz, Ahvaz, Tabriz, Qom, Ilam, Ardabil, Yasuj, Khorramabad, Bandar Abbas, Shahr-e Kurd, and Dehdasht.
In another tweet, Maryam Rajavi said, “I call on all students to support #Iran’s teachers and educators. Continued protests by teachers, workers, and other toiling sectors with chants of “we will obtain our rights even if we die,” bespeak of the Iranian people’s resolve to overthrow the mullahs’ religious fascism.”
Concerned over the continued demonstrations, the regime has enlisted their security forces to quell the protests. On September 12, protesters were attacked at the rally by the security forces and subjected to tear gas.
Earlier protests took place back in June, with participants also demanding that they should be provided with employment opportunities by the Ministry of Education. However, regime officials have ignored the teachers’ demands and attempted to downplay the cause of the rallies claiming that several of the protesters have ‘failed their exams’.
Despite the shortage of teachers across Iran, the education ministry refrains from employing the teachers.
