(2016) The contract was signed between Iran Airports and Air Navigation Company (IAANC) and French Thales Company, in the presence of Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhundi and French Minister of Transport Alain Vidalies in Tehran.

Under the agreement, Thales will supply Mehrabad, Shiraz, and Bandar Abbas airports with PSR (Primary Surveillance Radar) and SSR (Secondary Surveillance Radar) radar units to enhance surveillance radar monitoring and separation of air traffic.

According to Ahmad Momeni, a member of board of directors at IAANC, a contract for purchasing five radar systems worth 35 million euros was signed with Thales in 2005, but the fifth radar was never delivered to Iran as it coincided with Nicolas Sarkozy’s taking office.

Momeni added that during recent talks with Thales, the company has agreed to rectify the 2005 contract and the radar system will be delivered to Iran to be installed at Bandar Abbas Airport.

The three PSR and SSR radar systems have a coverage range of 80 and 400 miles, equipped with the latest technology of ‘S mode’ that can provide the necessary aviation services in the airports.

The contract is worth 6.4 million euros and the first installation will take place at Mehrabad Airport within 18 months, said Momeni.
