A Bahraini court has convicted a citizen of spying for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and joining a terror group.
The ruling passed by the Major Criminal Court came after a retrial for the defendant in a case dating back to 2013, Al Watan newspaper reported today.
He was among 23 people charged with spying for Iran and setting up a terror group called the “Imam Army” with the aim of carrying out attacks against state institutions in Bahrain.
In November 2013, a Bahraini court sentenced four defendants in the case to life imprisonment and six others to 15 years in prison each. Thirteen others were acquitted. Consequently, a lawyer for the Bahraini defendant, who was given 15 years in prison, appealed the verdict, arguing that his client had not been notified of the trial.
The appeal was accepted and a retrial was ordered for him. He was handed down the 15-year jail term in the retrial.
In recent years, Bahrain has uncovered several terrorist groups linked to Iran.
