“It’s pretty clear that the campaign is against BBC Persian, it’s against freedom of information and it’s against journalism generally,” he said at the United Nations General Assembly.
UN Special Rapporteurs are reporting to the General Assembly this week.
Both Mr Kaye and the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran, Dr Javaid Rehman, raised their concerns about the persecution of BBC Persian staff and their families.
Mr Kaye, in his annual report on freedom of expression around the world, raised his concern and said, “Iran continues to crack down on journalists — including on BBC Persian Service — and not just reporters but their families”.
Dr Rehman, in his first report to the General Assembly since taking up the Iran mandate, raised concern with the “continued intimidation of journalists inside and outside of Iran, including the BBC Persian Service” and about the continuation of the asset freeze injunction against BBC Persian staff.
