President Donald Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton on Tuesday hailed the United Arab Emirates’ support of the Trump administration’s restoration of sanctions against Iran that target core parts of Iran’s economy.

In a series of tweets, Bolton said the UAE — with whom the United States has been an early and close ally — “is right” to support the U.S. “approach,” and demanded Tehran “stop proliferating, supporting terror, and inciting sectarian and ethnic division.”

“As I said at the United Nations in September, if the Iranian regime continues to lie, cheat, and deceive; if it threatens the United States and our allies; if it harms our citizens, there will be hell to pay,” he added in another post Tuesday.

The UAE statement was unequivocal in its support of the sanction lift.

“The UAE strongly supports the [U.S.] approach to addressing global concerns about Iran’s behavior,” Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba, declared, adding it would continue to “work closely” with the United States, “regional allies, and other responsible nations to apply all the tools of diplomacy and statecraft to hold Iran accountable for its destabilizing activities in the Middle East and beyond.”

And, the ambassador warned: “Iran must stop its proliferation of ballistic missiles, end its support of violent proxies, cease plotting terrorist bombings, and discontinue its incitement of sectarian and ethnic division.”
