Two members of Shiraz city council in Iran say damages in the city during anti-government protests last week amount to 8.5-25 million dollars, based on the free market exchange rate.

Sina Bani Zamani, member of city council told ILNA news website that damages to infrastructure total $8.5 million, while another council member, Ebrahim Sabouri put the figure at $25 million.

A provincial official also said that in four cities in Fars Province; Shiraz, Sadra, Noor Abad and Kazeroun, “Around 200 banks and 20 gas stations have been totally destroyed”.

Based on this statement, the monetary value of damages can be even higher than what city council members have cited.

Fars Province and its capital Shiraz witnessed one of the most intense protests, with one video on social media showing a government helicopter flying over protesters and claiming that it fired on protesters to disperse the crowd.

A member of parliament representing the region of Fasa in the province told ILNA that during the protests rocket propelled grenades (RPG) and explosives were used, without providing any details. However, on November 17 there were reports on social media that IRGC forces in Shiraz used RPGs against protesters.

According to these unconfirmed reports, IRGC forces even targeted the car of an army commander who had refused to use force against protesters. The commander of Brigade 55, Zabihollah Bahman-Ziyari was killed.

According to Radio Farda’s estimates at least 300 people have been arrested in Fars and Amnesty International estimates 15 protesters were killed in the province.
