Earlier this year, U.S. President’s national security adviser John Bolton spoke about the Iranian regime and its role in the Middle East at the UN General Assembly. He said that U.S. troops are going to remain in Syria because of Iran regime’s interference there. “We’re not going to leave as long as Iranian troops are outside Iranian borders, and that includes Iranian proxies and militias.”
Iran and Syria are close allies and the Iranian regime has provided significant support to President Bashar al Assad and his regime in recent years. It has not just provided financial support, but it has also given technical and logistical support and it has trained combat troops.
The Iranian regime had spent billions in Syria. In fact, it would be more accurate to say that it has plundered much of Iran’s wealth on the Syrian civil war. It has been determined to keep Assad’s government in place and it sees its success in Syria as crucial to the regime’s survival.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been heavily involved with the conflict and it has lost more than 4,000 of its troops. Many of these were actual IRGC troops, including some very high-ranking members, and most of the rest were mercenaries that Iran recruited from the many Afghan and Pakistani immigrant communities that reside in Iran.
The Iranian regime is the number one threat to peace and security in the region and the fact that U.S. troops are to remain in Syria can only be positive. It has caused nothing but devastation and it is preventing the country from moving forward with the reconstruction process.
For as long as Iran remains in the country, there is no hope of a full resolution. Iran must be expelled, not just for the sake of the Syrians – millions of whom have been displaced, but also for the people of Iran.
The Iranians are completely exasperated at the regime’s involvement in conflicts across the region and the people have been very outspoken about the country’s wealth that has been plundered in Syria. The billions of dollars that have been spent supporting Assad and his regime could have greatly improved the Iranian economy and could have went towards providing better services and infrastructure at home.
Since the end of last year, the people have been protesting and holding anti-government demonstrations. They have made it very clear that the only acceptable resolution is regime change and they have vowed to continue putting pressure on the regime until it collapses.
The people of Iran know that they have no chance of ever experiencing freedom, human rights and democracy under the clerical regime’s rule. This is why it supports the United States’ sanctions on Iran.
Several members of the Trump administration have slammed the regime for its treatment of the people of Iran. Human rights organisations have expressed concern about the country’s human rights record. The people of Iran and the Iranian regime’s victims around the region are often the ones that are forgotten about, but they are the ones that will benefit the most from its collapse.
