An Iranian official in charge of an Islamic solidarity organization in Iran has said that his country will “sponsor” families of Palestinians killed this year in clashes with Israeli forces.

Ayatollah Mohsen Araki who heads the World Assembly of Solidarity Among Muslim Sects, an organization under the auspices of Iran’s Supreme Leader, made this statement during the Islamic Solidarity Conference held in Tehran in November, according to Tasnim news agency.

Araki, who was leading a commemoration for Imad Mughniyeh, a Lebanese Hezbollah militant killed in a car bomb blast in Damascus in 2008, announced that the Islamic Republic will sponsor the families of “martyred” Palestinians. This usually means monthly cash stipends from Iran. Mughniyeh’s daughter was present in the ceremony in Tehran.

This year, large popular protests have rocked Iran as the economy and living standards have deteriorated. Millions of Iranians blame the government for spending money for wars in Syria, Yemen and on militant groups in various countries.

Currently, workers in several cities in Iran are on strike and daily protests for unpaid wages.

Araki did not mention how many families Iran will sponsor, but 300 Palestinians have been killed and around 20,000 wounded on the Gaza border with Israel.
