The Iranian regime has used its repressive measures to keep the Iranian people from an uprising. However, the recent sanctions have brought matters to a head. Despite the continuing protests and demonstrations, the regime continues to use violence and arrests to attempt to limit the movements of the Iranian people.
Meanwhile, despite the efforts of the U.S. to limit the Iranian oil revenue, the regime continues to spend on its military endeavors, including its work in Yemen with the Houthi rebels. Evidence appears that to suggest that Iran is attempting to use the same approach it did with Hezbollah by financing the Houthi militia. They are arming the rebels with lethal weapons that give them the ability to attack the Yemeni people, as well as Saudi Arabia.
According to Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States, Prince Khalid Bin Salman, Hezbollah has helped the regime to kill dozens of Americans and hundreds of Syrians. The Houthis have also been part of plans by the regime to disrupt shipping routes.
Increasing Shows of Force Against the Regime
As part of its efforts to curtail the influence of the regime, the U.S. is not only increasing the level of sanctions, but the Trump administration is also increasing its military presence in the region. The USS John C. Stennis and accompanying ships will arrive by the end of the week and is the first of this particular military presence within the region in the last eight months.
Additionally, the Trump administration is encouraging Europe to impose new sanctions on Iran regarding its ballistic missile program. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is meeting with European officials in Brussels, where it is anticipated that the topic of Iran will come up.
“It is a grave and escalating threat, and nations around the world, not just Europe, need to do everything they can to be targeting Iran’s missile program,” said U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Brian Hook, as he rejected Iran’s efforts to paint its missile program as defensive.
France also expressed concern regarding Iran’s mid-range ballistic missiles and called on Tehran to immediately stop all its missile-related activities.
Challenges Mount for the Iranian Regime
Despite all its protests, the Iranian regime is facing chronic problems, including internal factors that are impacting its economy. While the sanctions have not yet reached their full impact, it is clear the Iranian regime’s levels of corruption have increased the economic crisis.
Several of the challenges faced by the regime is the decreasing value of its currency, high unemployment, lack of stable employment, and a water crisis.
With all these factors weighing in on the regime, the Iranian people seem closer than ever to removing the regime and creating a free Iran.
