The Defense Industries Organization (DIO) is a conglomerate of companies run by the Islamic Republic of Iran whose function is to provide the military of Iran with the necessary manufacturing capacity and technical abilities. In recent years, the DIO has attempted to become export-oriented, allowing Iran to become an exporter of weapons. Controlled by Iran’s Ministry of Defense Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL);

According to the U.S. Department of State, has engaged in activities that have materially contributed to the development of Iran’s nuclear and missile programs;

According to the U.N. Security Council, some subordinates have been “involved in Iran’s centrifuge program making components,” and in Iran’s missile program. Composite rotors for the P-2 centrifuge manufactured in a workshop situated on a DIO site. Several DIO workshops involved in the production of centrifuge components were visited by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2004;

Produces various defense equipment, including main battle tanks (MBTs), armored personnel vehicles (APVs), guns and gun-howitzers, multi-barrel rocket launchers, anti-tank missile weapon systems, small arms, ammunition from 100 mm up to 203 mm ranges, rifles, machine guns, short-, medium- and long-range missiles and rockets, chemical materials, nuclear/biological/chemical (NBC) protection equipment, and fast patrol boats; develops mines and explosives, including ammonium nitrate, ANFO, powder explosives, dynamite and fuses;

Materials shipped to the organization from LIMMT Metallurgy and Minerals Company Ltd. (LIMMT) allegedly include specialized aluminum alloy used almost exclusively in long range missile production, graphite cylinders used for banned electrical discharge machines, tungsten-copper plates, tungsten-copper alloy hollow cylinders, tungsten metal powder, maraging steel rods, furnace electrodes, and high carbon ferro-manganese; allegedly engaged in negotiations to have LIMMT send the organization gyroscopes, accelerometers, and tantalum;

Sister organizations include Iran Electronic Industries (Iran Electronics Industries), Aviation Industries Organization (AvIO), and Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO);

Subsidiaries include Armament Industries Group (AIG), Ammunition & Metallurgy Industries Group (AMIG), Chemical Industries & Development of Materials Group (CIDMG), Marine Industries Group (MIG), Special Industries Group (SIG), Vehicle & Equipment Industries Group (VEIG), Niru Battery Manufacturing Company, Defence Technology and Science Research Centre (which, according to the European Union, handles much of the procurement for the organization), and reportedly Kowsar Factory;

7th of Tir (7th of Tir Industrial Complex) is a subordinate entity, Parchin Chemical Industries is a branch;

Affiliated companies include Kaveh Cutting Tools Complex and Isfahan Alloy Steel Complex, Maham Ammunition Industries Group, Banihashem Industries Complex, Yazd Brass Products, Khodrosazan Fath Industries, and Research Institute of Vehicle’s Science and Technology;

According to the German government, entities linked to the organization have included Sanaye Jangafzarsazi, Shahid Hassan Bagheri (Shahid Hassan Bagheri Industrial Factories Group), and Doroud Industry Complex; according to the German government, has had an Electric and Electronic Instrument Division involved in procurement efforts; Hadid plant and Shahid Kolah Dooz Industrial Complex (Shahid Kuladooz Industrial Complex) reportedly part of DIO;

According to the British government, Mechanical Industry has been part of the organization;

Entities that are owned, controlled by, or act or purport to act on behalf of the organization include Khorasan Metallurgy Industries, Amin Industrial Complex, Yazd Metallurgy Industries, and Shahid Sayyade Shirazi Industries;

Bank Melli has provided or attempted to provide financial support to the organization;

Since 1992, it also has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, a submarine, and a fighter plane;

On September 21, 2020, the United States designated Iran’s Defense Industries Organization (DIO) for having engaged, or attempted to engage, in activity that materially contributes to the supply, sale, or transfer directly or indirectly to or from Iran, or for the use in or benefit of Iran, of arms or related materiel, including spare parts;
