Prince Reza Pahlavi, the exiled heir to Iran’s throne has asked European members of the UN Security Council to support a legal case against the Islamic Republic after a Reuters report saying 1, 500 protesters were killed by security forces in November.
The prince has asked governments to take the case to the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague. The court operating under the auspices of the United Nations deals with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
Iranian communities around the world were shocked by the Reuters report. Previously Amnesty International and opposition groups had estimated that 300-400 people were killed by government forces. The 1,500 figure was unexpected and reactions continue on social media and elsewhere.
Reza Pahlavi has written, “This regime murdered 1,500 Iranians on the streets in just a few days”, and added, “Instead of begging for dialogue & trade with this genocidal regime, refer it to the ICC for prosecution”.
Pahlavi is a leading opposition figure against the Islamic Republic and in recent protests people chanted his family name and praised the Pahlavi dynasty.
U.S. Special Representative for Iran, Brian Hook tweeted December 23, “The @Reuters report on the massacre ordered by @khamenei_ir underscores the urgency for the international community to punish the perpetrators and isolate the regime for the murder of 1,500 Iranian citizens.”
A senior member of Dutch foreign ministry, Geoffrey van Leeuwen referring to the Reuters report has also tweeted, “If these reports are true, the number of casualties are even worse than feared.”
