Prisoner Commits Suicide in Protest against Medieval Prison Conditions in Iran

After weeks of solitary confinement, a prisoner ended his life in Section 10 of Gohardasht Prison, Karaj.

The prison guards transferred him to solitary confinement of Ward 5 instead of treating him.

With an order by the warden, the prison guards transferred Seyed Hassan Hosseini from the ward to the solitary confinement of Ward 10 a few weeks ago. Hosseini, 36, was serving a 12-year sentence.

In order to get rid of these inhumane conditions, the prisoner went on hunger strike. However, the warden said, “You have to stay here unless you become obedient.” Hosseini committed suicide on July 25, 2017, to get rid of these inhumane conditions.

The prison warden, Mohammad Mardani, ordered guards to take the prisoner to the solitary confinement of Ward 5 instead of taking him to the infirmary.

The prisoner was deprived of visiting his family as he was kept in solitary confinement.
