Donald Trump said Iran’s “reckless actions” pose a threat to regional security today as he urged other countries to press Tehran to change its behaviour.

He said: “It is time of responsible nations to bring pressure on Iran to change this dangerous behaviour.”

The US President was referring to the rockets fired at the Golan Heights from Syria this week.

The Israeli Defence Minister warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to get rid of the Iranian military presence in his country or it will only cause “damage and problems”.

Avigdor Lieberman said: “I have a message for Assad: Get rid of the Iranians, get rid of Qassem Soleimani and the Quds force, they are not helping you, they are only harming.

“Their presence will only cause problems and damage. Get rid of the Iranians and we can, perhaps, change our mode of life here.”

Theresa May spoke with Mr Trump today and agreed that it was important to tackle Iran’s destabilising activity in the region.

Mrs May also agreed that talks were needed to establish how US sanctions would affect companies in Iran.

The US President announced that along with pulling out of the nuclear deal he would reimpose economic sanctions.

This raised alarm bells with leaders of Britain, France and Germany who are still committed to the deal and have significant trade ties with Tehran.

Mrs May also told Mr Trump that Britain and its European partners remained “firmly committed” to ensuring the deal was upheld as the best way to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister said: “”They agreed on the need for calm on all sides and on the importance of tackling Iran’s destabilising activity in the region.

“The prime minister raised the potential impact of US sanctions on those firms which are currently conducting business in Iran.

“They agreed for talks to take place between our teams.”
