A conservative lawmaker in Iran Saturday called a recent blaze at a government property warehouse “treasonous” and insisted that the fire was probably set intentionally.
Mostafa Mirsalim, a former presidential candidate, and a senior conservative politician said that with an “exact and flawless plan” the perpetrators of the arson wanted to obliterate any trace of “theft and treason”.
A blaze that took four hours to control broke out at warehouses belonging to government’s Organization of Confiscated Properties. Iranian media reported that the warehouses contained foodstuff, home appliances, personal hygiene items and other goods. Some thought that frequent power outages caused the fire.
But Mirsalim said there were a variety of luxury cars and tires, electric appliances, cell phones, printers and a large quantity of medicines and medical equipment, in addition to foodstuff and various drinks. The goods were confiscated from smugglers and other black-market operators and were being reviewed to be put on sale by the government.
Mirsalim asked, “Why after eight years, in the last few days of the [current] government the warehouses had to fall victim to a blaze.”
Tasnim news agency on Friday said that more than ten days after the incident, officials have offered no explanation for the fire offered no estimate of damages sustained.
