Political and civil rights activist Hashem Amini has been sentenced to 13 years in prison, IranWire has learned.
A member of the rapidly-growing “No to the Islamic Republic” campaign, Amini was jailed by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Torbat-e Heydarieh in Razavi Khorasan Province on Sunday February 6.
He was officially convicted of “propaganda against the regime,” “membership in dissident groups,” “insulting Ali Khamenei,” and “attending a protest rally”.
Amini, who hails from the nearby city of Bajestan, had publicly expressed his support for the anti-regime “No to the Islamic Republic” campaign. The straightforward slogan and an associated hashtag have gained currency among both activists and ordinary Iranians in the past 12 to 18 months, aiming to unite Iran’s often fractured opposition groups.
For making his position known, Amini was arrested by the IRGC’s Intelligence Unit last June. He was released on bail pending the court hearing. It is not known whether he has yet been summoned to begin serving his sentence
