The Justice Department on Wednesday charged a former Air Force intelligence specialist with spying for Iran, according to a grand jury indictment unsealed Wednesday.

Monica Elfriede Witt, who defected to Iran in 2013, is accused of creating packages for Iranian intelligence officers to target confidential U.S. intelligence officials.

Authorities said Ms. Witt’s activities caused “serious damage” to U.S. intelligence activities.

She faces seven charges, including conspiracy to deliver national defense information to representatives of a foreign government and delivering national defense information to representatives of a foreign government.
