Teachers and educators across Iran held rallies on Thursday in protest to poor living conditions, low paychecks and pensions, and authorities increasing security measures on campuses and school grounds.
They were also demanding the release of their colleagues, jailed for defending teacher’s rights.

Protesting teachers held demonstrations in front of the offices of the Education Ministry in several cities, including in Shiraz, Mashhad, Qazvin, Kermanshah, Urmia and Ardebil.
Iranian teachers, government employees and workers hold demonstrations almost every day in various Iranian cities in protest to their grave living conditions and low or delayed paychecks.
Thursday’s rallies come a day after a three-day nationwide strike that took place earlier this week, Sunday through Tuesday.
The three-day strike in more than 30 cities was the third nationwide protest movement by Iranian teachers.
Cities that joined the strike included Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz, Mashhad, Shiraz, Sanandaj, Karaj, Qazvin, Marivan, Yazd, Hamedan, Kermanshah, Babol, Iranshahr, Torbat-e Heydarieh, Jolfa, and Saqqez among others.
In the past year, teachers have held numerous rallies against poor economic conditions and the violation of their most basic rights and freedoms by the Iranian regime and its security forces.
With the Iranian regime discussing the budget for the upcoming Persian year (starting on March 21) in the parliament, protests by government employees and public sector workers as well as retirees have seen an escalation.
Teachers say that not enough funds are being allocated to the education sector while working and retired government employees are demanding the modification of the budget bill to incorporate their needs.
