Last week, thousands of Iranian-Americans from across the United States converged on Washington’s Freedom Plaza to call for democratic change in Iran. They then marched to the White House, where they urged support for Iran’s nationwide uprisings against the clerical regime. The participants held banners with pictures of NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi, supporting her 10-point plan for a future free Iran.
In a televised message to the rally, NCRI President-elect Mrs. Maryam Rajavi marked International Women’s Day and the struggles of Iranian people for freedom in their country. “The regime now faces one of the most difficult periods of its rule. The continued uprisings have destabilized the ruling structure. And there is no going back. Change in Iran is within reach more than any other time,” Mrs. Rajavi said.
Congressman Brad Sherman, a senior member of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, and Nonproliferation, told the rally participants: “I want to commend Madame Rajavi for continuing her advocacy for democracy, human rights, women’s rights, and minority rights in Iran.”
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, under heavy rain, addressed the Iranians: “I believe in what you believe in. The Iranian people want regime change.”
Linda Chavez, a former White House official, condemned human rights violations in Iran and the recent appointment of Ebrahim Raeesi (Ebrahim Raisi) as the regime’s judiciary chief, a perpetrator of the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in 1988.
Adam Ereli, former U.S. Ambassador to Bahrain and former deputy spokesperson of the State Department, also delivered powerful remarks at the Washington, D.C., Iran Freedom March. “There are millions of Iranians who don’t let prison or torture or hunger or death stop them from protesting.”
The March 8 rally, organized by the Organization of Iranian American Communities (OIAC), displayed a strong show of support for the NCRI, and People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (Mujahedin-e Khalq, MEK). In June 2018, European authorities revealed that, fearful of the MEK’s growing support inside Iran, the regime tried to bomb the MEK at the annual Free Iran rally in Paris.
Amb. Ken Blackwell, a former U.S. ambassador to the UN Commission on Human Rights, wrote this week: “The resilience of Iran’s activist community was on display here in Washington this week, as thousands of Iranian-Americans marched in support of the NCRI and its 10-point Plan for an Iran that is free, democratic, and nonnuclear.”
“They sought to bring the message of Iran’s people to Washington. Simply put, they have had enough. They are strong. They are capable. And they’re determined to succeed in overthrowing this evil and illegitimate regime. They deserve moral and political support from the democratic nations of the world.”
