Iran is growing increasingly concerned about the potential threats to its nuclear program and its personnel and plans to set up a special security force to protect them, the Islamic republic’s media reported this week.

The new unit will be under the control of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards intelligence unit and will be called the “nuclear facilities defense command.”

The command will be part of Iran’s intelligence apparatus, with the aim of protecting sensitive facilities from sabotage and high-profile individuals linked with the nuclear program from assassinations “by Israel and other hostile elements.”

Multiple nuclear facilities and Iranian nuclear scientists have been the targets of mysterious misshapes and assassinations since 2010, something that has long been believed to be the work of Israeli intelligence.

Israel, for its part, has never commented on Iran’s allegations to that effect.
