A city council member in Mehriz, central Iran was sentenced to 74 lashes by the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor on May 3.

According to the state-run Fars News Agency, the flogging sentence was given to the unidentified man in addition to other punishments for “illegal seizure and unauthorized use of municipal property”.

This is the fourth flogging sentence handed out by Iran’s Judiciary in May. In April, there were 15 flogging sentences issued by Iran’s Judiciary.

In another case on May 3, three other Iranians were sentenced to lashes for theft in Tehran.

Despite the prohibition of the use of inhumane punishments by all international civil and political rights conventions, flogging is regularly handed out by the Iranian regime. Over 100 “offences” are punishable by flogging under the Iranian law. According to a 2020 report by Amnesty International, at least 160 were sentenced to flogging for theft and assault as well as for acts that are protected under the international human rights law.
