A prisoner named Amir Bayati who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder during a dispute, has been executed in Shiraz Central Prison.
According to Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Shiraz Central Prison in the early hours of May 16. His identity has been established as Amir Bayati, who had been sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.
Amir Bayati was arrested in 2017 for committing murder during a dispute and had been on death row since.
Speaking to IHR, an informed source said: “Amir had committed murder during a fight and had repeatedly stated that the murder was not intentional and he had lost his temper when the victim used obscene words against his honour and this fight led to the murder.”
At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for “premeditated murder.”
As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
