As coronavirus deaths in Iran rise above 291,000, according to the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), the Iranian state-run media has started to admit that this horrific situation has been caused by the regime’s failed and cruel policies and warned that the people are likely to revolt.
The Sharq daily wrote Monday: “Amid the country’s crises, beyond officials’ [infightings], and while we are reaching the critical and decisive days of [the presidential elections] on behalf of people, whose cries are lost in the uproar of events, we warn We warn about the most important and vital issue of life these days. Providing and distributing vaccines should be the first mission of all government agencies.”
In fact, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei actually banned the import of safe and effective vaccines from the US and UK in January, claiming wrongly that they were being tested on Iranians even though Brits and Americans were already being immunised. There have been many comments since about a domestic vaccine or the import of US and UK vaccines from elsewhere and even of vaccine shipments disappearing.
Sharq admitted that the “contradictory news” about vaccines indicates that the decision-making system in the regime is failing.
This should not be surprising because the regime has tried to downplay the crisis since the start with the shadowy goal of using the virus to suppress the people, hoping that they will be too scared of dying to protest the regime’s failures. Unsurprisingly, this has not worked.
The Etemad daily wrote Sunday: “Governments and regimes are using the Covid-19 outbreak to cover up their weakness and inefficiency, and by creating fear, worriedness, and limitations for people, make opportunities for themselves.”
The state-run Arman daily was meanwhile admitting that the management of coronavirus in Iran is “unstable” with citizens left “baffled” by the sudden changes in policy.
Alireza Zali, the head of Tehran’s anti-coronavirus task force, announced the possibility of an Indian and African coronavirus in Tehran and said: “When a significant number of this type of infection has been reported in several provinces, there is no doubt that there are mutated types in Tehran because Tehran experiences a high volume of inter-provincial communication and is the destination of many trips. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to expect mutated species to be observed in Tehran as well.” (ISNA, May 19, 2021)
Of course, not only are hundreds dying every day but the livelihoods of many are being destroyed, with students deprived of the education that could get them better jobs and people losing their jobs and forced to take on demeaning tasks or even steal to make ends meet.
The Arman daily warned that the regime’s coronavirus policy has increased anger amongst the people and that this could lead to another uprising.
It wrote: “Economic problems, inflation, and the fear of death and disease have drastically reduced people’s patience. People commute in the city like moving powder kegs that could explode at any moment.”
Hossein Marashi one of the head of the regime’s so-called reformist faction about the pressure on the people said:
“In recent years, countless pressures have been put on people’s lives, which is also rooted in the inefficiency of the country’s management system and, of course, the inefficiency of previous governments. During the last two decades, the political, social and economic demands of the people have accumulated and over time, when these demands have not been met, it has caused a great deal of frustration to the people. People’s resentment is a political warning that is now crystallized in the form of unwillingness to participate in elections.” (Shargh Daily, May 19, 2021)
The state-run daily Vatan-e-Emrooz warned of the dire consequences of rising commodity prices and public outrage and wrote: “No official has yet commented on why prices are rising. No one can explain the reasons for the tsunami of rising commodity prices at the beginning of the year, which could lead to public dissatisfaction.” (State-run daily Vatan-e-Emrooz, May 19, 2021)
Indeed, the regime’s policy on just about everything is failing, with the regime unable to suppress the growing protests of the people.
