Iran is “dangerous” for the stability of the Middle East and the world, former US President George W. Bush told Fox News Wednesday and commented about how the US should deal with Tehran.

Bush also blamed the violence between armed militant Palestinian groups and Israel raging for ten days, said what “you’re seeing playing out is Iranian influence targeted toward Israel.”

In January 2002, President Bush called Iraq, Iran and Norther Korea the “axis of evil”, in a prelude to his administration policy of overthrowing Saddam Hussein’s regime.

Bush told Fox that the US should deal with Iran with the understanding that “their influence is dangerous for world peace, that they are very much involved with extremist movements in Lebanon and Syria and Yemen, and they are aiming to spread their influence.”

Bush, who was generally silent on foreign policy during Donald Trump’s presidency, commented on the current indirect negotiation with Iran and said, “Any deal that is done has got to not only focus on its nuclear capabilities, but also its influence in the Middle East.” He added, “And you know, any deal, you’ve got to keep in mind the dangers of an aggressive Iran to our allies, and to stability, so it has to be a comprehensive look.”

President Joe Biden has made it clear that he wants to return to Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, JCPOA, the nuclear deal Trump abandoned in 2018, but critics say the move coupled with lifting of sanctions will leave no incentive for Iran to make concession on its regional and other policies.
