Iran announces its support for Turkish-backed government in Libya

Iran has said it shares views with Turkey on ways to resolve the Libyan crisis, expressing its support for the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord.

“We seek to have a political solution to the Libyan crisis to end the civil war,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said at a joint press conference in Ankara with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, on Monday.

“We support the legitimate government in Libya, and it is able to end the ongoing war. We have common views with the Turkish side on ways to end the crisis in Libya and Yemen,” he added.

On Tuesday morning, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif left Istanbul after a visit to Turkey that started on Sunday, heading to the Russian capital, Moscow.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Sayyed Abbas Mousavi said that Zarif had held talks with his Turkish counterpart Çavuşoglu on bilateral relations and the most important regional and international issues.

Iran’s support for the Government of National Accord contrasts that of their close ally, Syria, who is currently in an alliance with the Tobruk-based Libyan Parliament.
