A Kurd singer who was arrested in mid-February was sentenced to two years of prison on charges of “spreading propaganda” against the state.
Reports indicate that Peyman Mirzazadeh was transferred to the 110th Branch of the Orumieh Public Court where he was tried for spreading propaganda.
A source close to his family said that he was charged for singing epic Kurdish songs.
Mirzazadeh was detained on February 21 by intelligence agents in the western city of Orumieh and was then transferred to the Orumieh Intelligence Detention Center after four days of interrogations.
He was then taken to 1st Branch of the Revolutionary Court where he was sentenced to two years of prison and a permanent ban on singing. His trial was held without a lawyer. The sentence was subsequently lowered to one year and eight months of prison.
With the new sentence, the Kurd singer has to serve three years and eight months of prison.
Before this, Mirzazadeh was arrested in December 2017 and was sentenced to six months of prison for singing revolutionary Kurdish songs. He was recently released this month from the Central Orumieh Prison after finishing his term.
It is worth mentioning that several Kurdish singers and artists have been arrested and charged with spreading propaganda against the state for singing revolutionary Kurdish songs at weddings and other ceremonies.
