U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) have introduced legislation to end the temporary waivers to permit countries part of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal to conduct civil nuclear projects with the regime.
The two legislators circulated their bill to officials at the Departments of State, Treasury and Energy, reported Bloomberg News on Thursday.
The proposed legislation would end the waivers allowing research at the Arak reactor, underground enrichment facility at Fordow and the Tehran Research Reactor.
The Trump administration renewed the 90-day waivers on July 31. The next deadline is Feb. 1.
Whether they will be extended is unknown.
In a wide-ranging interview with JNS in August, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said about renewing waivers: “The president will make that decision at the appropriate time.”
Recently, Iran has been installing dozens of advanced centrifuges to accelerate uranium enrichment, among other violations of the 2015 deal, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
