At least three women have been killed by their own family members in Iran over the past couple of weeks, raising to over 20 the number of women slain by their husbands, fathers, brothers and other male relatives or acquaintances in the past month and a half, IranWire has learned.
The latest fatal victims of domestic violence in Iran included 37-year-old Parisa Mohammadi from the Caspian city of Babol, 26-year-old Hadis Islami from Mashhad, in the country’s northeast, and 40-year-old Hamideh Sharifat from the southwestern city of Omidiyeh.
Their killing served as yet another grim reminder of widespread domestic violence in Iran, and emphasized the urgent need for societal awareness and initiatives to prevent such tragedies from occurring.
Parisa Mohammadi
Parisa Mohammadi was stabbed with a knife by her husband in Babol on October 30, amid what Iranian media labeled a “family dispute.”
An informed source told IranWire that Mohammadi, the second wife of a 60-year-old man named Farzad, owned a hair salon, and her mother was affluent.
“The fact that Farzad first took the life of his wife and then her elderly mother, both through stabbing, before turning the weapon on himself, raises questions about potential financial disputes within the family,” the source said.
The source pointed out that Mohammadi’s financial situation was generally sound, although she had experienced some difficulties recently.
Hadis Islami
According to information obtained by IranWire, Hadis Islami, 26, was employed as a wedding videographer.
Her family members reported her as missing on October 21.
The Shahrara News media outlet quoted Mahmoud Arefi Rad, a judge investigating homicide cases in Mashhad, as stating that, “following thorough technical and investigative procedures, the husband of this young woman has been apprehended as one of the suspects involved in the murder.”
The husband has reportedly confessed to the killing.
The judicial official also announced the arrest of an accomplice, but it remains unclear who is the primary perpetrator of the murder.
According to a person with knowledge of the situation, Islami arrived at her home after work and called her husband to ask him to open the door.
The young woman then vanished.
Her car was discovered on Mashhad’s Zed Square, while her phone was found on a highway.
The source suggests that Islami was fatally shot at close range in a private garden, with the bullet striking her head, and her remains were buried on Mashhad’s Khin Arab road, approximately one kilometer away.
Her husband disclosed the burial location to the police, according to the source.
Hamideh Sharifat
In the final week of October, Hamideh Sharifat, a 40-year-old mother of two teenage girls, met a tragic end at the hands of her brother, who fired three shots at her.
A source told IranWire that Sharifat had been compelled to marry her cousin from whom she divorced one or two years ago.
She was living with her two daughters.
Sharifat was killed because her brother suspected she had separated from her husband because she was having an affair with another man.
The family chose to remain silent and complicit in the killing.
The death was treated as an accident, and Sharifat was laid to rest in a cemetery designated for victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.
