A woman who fled Iran after being sentenced to 12 years in prison for her part in women’s protests against the headscarf faces being deported back there after she was arrested in Turkey.

Nasibe Semsai, 36, an architect and mountaineer who has scaled Iran’s tallest peaks, was detained at Istanbul airport as she attempted to fly to Spain with a fake passport.

She was one of the figures behind the 2018 “White Wednesday” protests, in which women took off their headscarves or wore white ones in public places and handed out white flowers to passers-by. The headscarf is mandatory for women in Iran, which has been ruled by an Islamist theocracy since the revolution of 1979.
