Against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Indian Ocean and recent Pentagon claims regarding an Iranian drone’s alleged targeting of a tanker, Iranian state media reported a significant upgrade to the nation’s naval firepower.
The Iranian Navy fleet has recently received long-range cruise missiles with a reported striking distance of over 1000 kilometers.
Shahram Irani, the chief of Iran’s Navy, highlighted the advanced capabilities of the newly received Talaeiyeh cruise missile. This “smart” missile is purportedly capable of adapting its targets mid-mission, a feature underscored by state media outlets, according to Reuters.
Admiral Irani revealed that along with these cruise missiles, the Navy also received reconnaissance helicopters, domestically produced drones, and marine-based cruise missiles, expanding Iran’s maritime offensive potential.
The specific delivery of these missiles was made to a naval base situated in Konarak, a southern Iranian port located southeast of Tehran, bolstering Iran’s naval presence in the region.
Iran claims possession of a diverse arsenal of missiles, boasting ranges of up to 2000 kilometers (1250 miles), capable of reaching adversaries like Israel and U.S. bases within the vicinity. However, the independent verification of these claims remains a challenge as Tehran’s history includes instances of exaggerating its military capabilities.
