The protests in Iran are now firmly into their second week and they are showing the cracks in the foundation of the Iranian Regime. Like all dictatorships, the Iranian Regime is set to fall because they don’t have the will of the people behind them.
This does not mean that the Iranian people need to overthrow their Regime without outside help; many nations around the world have had help casting off their oppressors, like the French helping the burgeoning US to fight off the British.
The US need not intervene militarily; instead they can use their advanced economic, political, and technological might to amplify the voices of the oppressed and correct four decades of appeasement towards the brutal mullahs.
When Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini seized power in 1979, as part of a much larger and more ideologically diverse revolution against the Shah, no one could have predicted how quickly and cruelly they would turn on their people.
The Regime imposed theocratic rule, executed tens of thousands of political dissidents without trials, and exiled and slandered members of the People’s Mujahideen of Iran (PMOI/MEK). In essence, it replaced one corrupt dictator with another.
The Iranian Regime has since wasted it’s nations resources on regional conflicts that it had no business in (i.e. Yemen and Syria), sponsored terrorist groups, and held the Iranian people hostage.
In 2009, when thousands in Tehran took to the streets to protest the rigged election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the world looked away. The Regime’s violent crackdown left dozens dead and thousands imprisoned.
Ted Poe, a Republican Congressman from Texas, wrote on the Washington Examiner that, as the leader of the free world, the US should not turn its back again but should instead echo the leadership of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan who emboldened fledgeling democratic movements in their own times.
Poe, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote: “My congressional colleagues and I are watching the current protests in Iran closely. What started as a protest of the poor economic conditions inside Iran quickly sharpened its focus toward the regime that is responsible for the country’s ills. If there is any silver lining to the misguided nuclear agreement the Obama administration struck with Tehran, it is that the billions of dollars delivered to the mullahs has exposed their corruption. The Iranian people have rightly seen that despite the removal of sanctions, they are no better off because the wealth of their nation is being hoarded by the Ayatollah and his IRGC goons to spread terror externally.”
He advised that the US should move beyond platitudes by using the US tech industry to ensure that the Iranian people can communicate amongst themselves and with the outside world, in spite of the Regime’s strict internet censorship. This will provide essential evidence to prosecute the Regime.
Poe, chairman of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade, wrote: “I welcome President Trump’s leadership on the cause of the Iranian people and urge my colleagues that now is the time that we must act.”
