Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi met with officials of Palestinian resistance factions Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) during his visit to Syria, expressing Iran’s support for the Palestinian struggle and urging Israel’s defeat.

The meeting took place at the Syrian presidential palace, with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in attendance.

“The Zionist entity is at its weakest, and the Palestinian resistance is at its best,” the Iranian president said during the meeting.

“We are proud of the Palestinian resistance youth who defend Al-Aqsa Mosque,” he added, referring to the fierce resistance of Palestinians during the past few months.

Damascus-based Palestinian official Khaled Abdul-Majid told AP that the delegation briefed Raisi on the latest developments in the occupied West Bank, Jerusalem, and Gaza.

“The Palestinian leaders thanked Iran for its support to the resistance and the Palestinian cause,” Abdul-Majid said.

Among the officials that joined the meeting were PIJ leader Ziad al-Nakhala and Khalil al-Hayya, a senior member of Hamas.

According to Raisi’s office, the Iranian president called on Muslims to “use all their capacities to achieve Palestine’s violated rights and the freedom of the holy Quds [Jerusalem].”

“Today more than ever, the unity and cohesion of the resistance forces, the region, and the Islamic world are necessary to accelerate the defeat of the Zionist regime and the liberation of the holy Quds and the sovereignty of the Palestinians over their destiny,” the president said.

Regarding the Abraham Accords normalization agreements signed by the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco, Raisi stated that the Trump administration, which brokered the agreements, “forced some governments to restore relations with the Zionists, but what actually happened was [Israel] reneging on its promises and continuing to violate Palestinians’ rights, as well as commit murder and plunder.”

Those who inked those accords with Israel, however, have realized their mistake, according to Raisi, saying, “It reached a point where the supporters of the normalization of relations are facing protests and questions by their own people and realized that there is no other path but to resist and stand against the Zionist regime.”

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad hosted his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi on 3 May in Damascus to discuss the relationship between the two countries and to commemorate the “victory of truth.”

Raisi’s visit marks the first by an Iranian president to Syria in 13 years.
