Amnesty International Twitter 9 June, 2023:
Amnesty is alarmed at the Iranian authorities’ harassment of the family of tortured protester Majid Kazemi, whom they arbitrary executed on 19 May. The authorities have subjected his brothers Mehdi Kazemi and Hossein Kazemi to enforced disappearance following his execution. Authorities arrested Hossein Kazemi after summoning him to a morgue where they cruelly told him, for the first time, they executed Majid. They took Hossein to a cemetery where they dumped Majid’s body in a small grave not large enough to properly fit him and then arrested Hossein.

Authorities arrested Mehdi Kazemi days later when the family was attempting to hold a commemoration marking the third day of Majid’s death. They have denied the family any information about the fate and whereabouts of Mehdi and Hossein.
Amnesty International also condemns the vandalism and arson of Majid’s grave. It was vandalised just hours after authorities told his family they were not allowed to visit his grave for his birthday, on 8 May. Whoever is responsible for this shocking criminal act must be held accountable.
Iranian authorities must reveal the whereabouts of Mehdi Kazemi and Hossein Kazemi, protect them from abuse and release them, as they are being held solely for exercising their human rights.
Amnesty International also urges the international community to take action against the Iranian authorities’ continued targeting of victims’ families, which is intended to stop them from seeking truth and justice for their loved ones.
Given the crisis of impunity in Iran, we urge all states to exercise universal jurisdiction over Iranian officials against whom there is sufficient admissible evidence of criminal responsibility for enforced disappearance and other crimes under international law.
