According to a report by the Iranian news agency TASNIM, Iran unveiled a new underground missile depot on Friday, alongside an announcement regarding the production of a “new special missile.” A video released shows the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), General Hossein Salami, and the IRGC Aerospace Force Commander, General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, touring the facility. The exact location of the facility was not disclosed, but it has been nicknamed the “Old Volcano.”
The MEHR news agency noted that some of the recent military operations carried out by Iran against Israel were based on weapons stored in this depot. According to the agency, the facility is one of several constructed as part of Iran’s efforts to bolster its missile and UAV capabilities.
Simultaneously, CNN reported that Iran has launched a series of large-scale military exercises, during which it is expected to reveal additional facilities similar to the recently unveiled underground depot. General Ali Mohammad stated that further military exercises this month will unveil “missile and UAV cities”—underground facilities designed to store missiles, weapons, and naval equipment.
Over the weekend, a large-scale military maneuver was held in the capital, Tehran, involving 110,000 members of Basij, Iran’s volunteer force. Additionally, Iranian military forces conducted a series of drills as part of “war games” aimed at simulating operational scenarios across various fronts.
The unveiling of these facilities and extensive maneuvers comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly in light of Iran’s declarations of its intent to strengthen its defensive and offensive systems in response to regional and international pressures. International observers believe the new facility and the announced special missile serve as a clear message to regional states, especially Israel, aimed at deterring military confrontation.
These recent steps indicate further intensification in Iran’s arms race as the country continues to enhance its defense infrastructure and solidify its strategic position in the region.
